Nick Fury SR and his Howling Commandos
Nick Fury SR and his Howling Commandos are ready for action!
My second issue in this comic book cover diorama series is a nod to war comics and the American propaganda that helped shape early Marvel Comics
For those who dont know, Stan Lee worked in the armys training film division during WWII. He was given the extremely rare military occupation of "playwright" and wrote training manuals and slogans to educate the troops and occasionally drew cartoons. He worked alongside Dr. Seuss, Frank Capra, and Charles Addams to help shape how the troops saw the war, the enemy, and themselves.
Fast forward to 1963, and Marvel comics launched their new WWII war comic - SGT. Fury and his Howling Commandos. Before Nick Fury was an Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. he was a SGT in the US army, leading a diverse group of soldiers against actual N&zi's not just the fictional Hydra. Late in the run, he famously lost his eye and became the super spy we all know today.
At one point, this piece was basically my plan B if the brotherhood diorama didn't work out. When I first saw these models on the single base, I instantly thought they should be on the cover of a comic. The poses and forward motion of the models grouped together were just perfect for what I had in mind. After the success of the brotherhood diorama at adepticon and all the messages I received from people saying they wanted to do something similar. I thought I better knock this out before someone else did, lol. It took longer than I wanted, but im so glad I came back to this idea. This will not be heading to the path of the worthy next year as I have some plans for a 3rd issue with another team. It may find its way into other comps, but I'm not sure yet.
I hope you like this silver age project.
Thanks for looking!
