Fungus

Fungus from the Pilgrims series by ZabaArt had been sitting on my shelf of shame for quite a while. I already had an idea of how I wanted to portray him, but it took me some time to finally get started. I eventually began working on the project during a regular get-together with fellow miniature painters in February.

From the beginning, I wanted to place Fungus in his own little camp kitchen. For the mushroom body, I decided to try oil paints, while the rest of the figure was painted with acrylics.

A large part of the project went into creating the base and bringing the camp kitchen to life. I built the scene around a campfire with a tripod and cooking pot. I originally considered adding an LED light beneath the embers, but eventually decided to create the glow with yellow and orange paint instead.

Above the fire, I added smoke made from cotton wool, airbrushed with grey paint. I also wanted Fungus to have a place to prepare his ingredients, so I added a wooden chopping block surrounded by acorns, acorn caps and other small details.

I couldn’t find a suitable STL file for the cooking pot, so I eventually created my own model and had it 3D printed.

The finished piece brings together my original idea of Fungus in his own little camp kitchen.
