Sentries, a Pylon, and a Growing Protoss Army

A few more models finished for the Protoss collection: two Sentries and a Pylon.

I changed up how I painted the gold this time. I started with a solid basecoat of rich gold, then used black and brown inks for the shading. After that, I came back with the original rich gold and some yellow ink. I thought that gave the metallic parts a nice shine, and it’s one of the things I’m happiest with on these models.

The Pylon was also an opportunity to experiment with OSL. I wanted the blue crystal to feel like an energy source affecting the structure around it, so I worked some of that blue into the surrounding metal and base. I’m still figuring out how to make that effect convincing, but I wanted to document this attempt.

I’m a little less excited about the photography this time. My flash didn’t trigger for one setup, and I moved the scenery before checking the shots, so I lost that composition. I ended up with four photographs that cover the models from a few different viewpoints.

The first is my favorite. I like how it showcases the Sentries with the Pylon behind them. The other angles give the Pylon more attention and show more of the crystal and gold framework.

I also included the painted army so far. Seeing everything together was a satisfying part of the session. There’s plenty left to paint, but it’s nice to see a few completed units starting to add up.
