Corvus Corax

My next Primarch mini is now complete, so here is Corvus Corax, 19th Legion Primarch and leader of the Raven Guard! This brings my total Primarchs up to 9 painted, so I'm officially half-way through my goal of painting them all. I think Corvus was one of my favourites to work on so far!

This was an awesome mini to work on, although we won't talk about how many times my indelicate touch caused one of the spines on his wings to come off! Thankfully it was a simple fix each time. I tried a couple of new techniques on this one - the first was an attempt at producing a marble effect on the stone on the base, using the airbrush and steel wool to produce the pattern. I'm quite happy with how this went, although i think for future attempts I might try to push it further and make it more vibrant, maybe by mixing some gold in there!

The other new technique was the colour blending on the wing spines, which I didn't decide I wanted to do until right at the end. I painted most of the parts of the mini separately and assembled it at the end, but after doing so, I had the idea to blend the wing colours using the airbrush. Some careful application of masking putty and pieces of card helped to avoid the overspray issue on the rest of the model, and I'm glad I took the risk, I love how the wings came out!

I'm also quite happy with how his armour came out - black armour is something I always struggle with, I've always found trying to shade or highlight it simply makes it look dull or dirty. This time, I based the armour colour on Payne's Grey, and the blue-tint helped to avoid that problem. More practice needed here I think, but I'm happy with it for now!
