I’ve had this little dude since fairly early in my hobby. I’ve always liked the sculpt, but I was also a little afraid to paint it. Prime Time felt like a good opportunity to finally face that and see what I could do with a limited palette.
I’ve included a picture of the paints alongside the finished photos. Mixing my own tones took quite a bit of patience, but I definitely came away more confident with it.
The figure’s right arm was one of the most satisfying areas to paint. I managed to mix an ivory tone, then used that to make progressively lighter greens and build up the volumes. The layers could be blended more smoothly, but I was happy to see the shape of the arm coming through.
I also tried to get a gold-ish appearance on the weapon and jewelry. I usually rely on metallic paints for that, so finding colors that gave me some of the impression I wanted felt like an accomplishment.
Refining the transitions was where I struggled most. I’d do a few glazing passes, wait for them to dry, and find that the blend still wasn’t quite there. I was also nervous about covering up work I already liked. Between that and the effort of mixing, my patience started to run out. There are still rough areas, and getting more comfortable with that stage of painting is something I’d like to work on.
For the photography, I kept things fairly simple and used my 56 mm lens throughout. Two of the shots feel more like a close examination of the painting with an interesting background. The other has more of the cinematic feeling I enjoy, with the woodland scene giving him somewhere to belong.
I’m especially happy with how distinct the different parts of the sculpt look in the photos. After spending so long feeling hesitant about painting him, it’s satisfying to see him finished and looking at home in a scene.
Glad this challenge gave me the push to finally get some paint on him!
