Hill Giant
Army Painter Color Palette
Muscle & Skin: Base with Barbarian Flesh, shade with Flesh Wash, and highlight with re-applied Barbarian Flesh followed by Pale Flesh on the highest peaks of the muscles.
Hair & Beard: Base with Daemonic Yellow, use Strong Tone for the deep shadows in the braids, and drybrush with Desert Yellow and a touch of Matt White for the tips.
Furs: Base with Monster Brown, wash heavily with Strong Tone, and drybrush with Leather Brown followed by Banshee Brown to catch the texture.
The Tunic: For that mossy green look, use Army Green shaded with Military Shader, highlighted with Necrotic Flesh. For the red loincloth, use Crusted Sore faded up to Mars Red.
The Log Weapon: Base the bark in Oak Brown, wash with Dark Tone, and drybrush with Greenskin and Krakenskin to simulate moss growth. Use Dirt Splatter for the cut wood grain on the front.
Neon Bracers: Base with White Matt, then apply Speedpaint: Zealot Yellow or Fluorescent Green (from the Effects line) for that intense glow. Highlight the edges with a mix of Fluorescent Green and Matt White.
Metal Straps: Base with Matt Black and edge highlight with Uniform Grey to create a "Black Metal" look without using metallics.
Key Techniques Used
Volumetric Highlighting: This is most apparent on the giant's chest and arms. By placing the lightest highlights (Pale Flesh) only on the very top of the muscle "bulbs," the painter created a sense of massive scale and lighting.
Heavy Drybrushing: The fur and the log bark rely on this. It’s a fast way to make the Army Painter browns look like natural materials by catching all that sculpted detail.
Color Blocking for Contrast: The use of the vibrant green against the earthy browns is a classic "complementary" move. It draws the viewer’s eye immediately to the giant’s hands (and weapon).
Deep Shading (The "Dip" Method or Washes): The deep recesses in the beard and between the fingers suggest a heavy application of Strong Tone or Dark Tone to ensure every detail is separated and readable from a distance.
