Persephone’s Vengeance: The Beauty of Decay
"She is the beauty of the grove until the mist clears—and by then, the poison has already taken hold."
This piece was created for a fellow player’s D&D campaign, envisioned as a spectral guardian of Persephone’s grove. The goal was to capture a "Grimbright" aesthetic—balancing the majestic allure of a mythical creature with the sudden, jarring horror of the undead. I wanted to portray a creature that captivates its victim with beauty before the danger is realized. By the time the observer notices the deteriorating flesh and the scent of death, they are already within striking distance. The flowers adorning the body are Aconitum (Wolfsbane)—vibrant bluish-purple blooms that serve as a natural warning of the lethal poison within.
A stunning three part sculpt "Persephone, Death Reborn" by Witchsong Miniatures, originally 180mm, but I scaled it down to 32mm. The challenge was maintaining the fine details and the "deadly majesty" at such a small size. I focus on three areas,
The Mist: Instead of standard black shadows, I used a palette of Magenta, Bright Pink and Dark Purple to create a rolling supernatural mist. These tones transition into a deep black, allowing the colors to act as haunting undertones that highlight the unicorn as it "breaks" through the fog.
The Coat: To show the remnants of its former life, I used underpainting of Dark Purple, Dark Greys and flesh tones, topped with single-stroke highlights of Bright White. This technique was used to simulate individual strands of matted hair still clinging to the degrading muscular structure.
The Flowers: to adorn the creature with Aconitum (Wolfsbane). In nature, these flowers serve as a warning that predators recognize, and I wanted to capture that same sense of "beautiful danger." To achieve an uncanny, ethereal look, I used Pro Acryl Ultra Marine and Light Sky Blue. These vibrant, cool tones contrast against the decaying warmth of the flesh, drawing the eye toward the flowers and creating a supernatural glow that feels both majestic and deeply unsettling.
