Drew Dreams of Terry Gilliam
I have been a fan of Monty Python for as long as I can remember, and I’ve always been mesmerized by the surreal collage art of Terry Gilliam. His animations have a strange, dreamlike quality that blends medieval imagery, humor, and the grotesque in a way that feels both playful and unsettling.
For this piece, I took a model by Trent Holbrook and intentionally painted it through that lens. I pushed the colors and shapes toward a more graphic, illustrative style inspired by Gilliam’s work—abnormally tinted skin, bold but slightly desaturated colors, and strong outlines that flatten the form into something closer to a moving illustration than a traditional miniature.
Rather than focusing on realism, the goal was to capture the spirit of Gilliam’s visual language: exaggerated contrast, surreal iconography, and a slightly off-kilter palette that feels like it stepped out of one of his animated sequences.
