The Trench Cleric
Entering into the Minis as Art Celebration!
I saw this model and initially thought, this is an old man. Maybe it's the beard, but the idea of the old warrior came to mind. Someone who has seen horrors and has been battered, but is still standing. As such I imagined his armor being worn and battered but still intact. I went with the official art for Trench Crusade's Trench Cleric and liked the idea of a deep green for the plate.
Base coated the whole model in Gravelord Grey, Uniform Grey, and then Matt White in a Slapchop method before going over portions of the cloak, cross, and book in Sunburst Ochre from the John Blanche Collection. I then use some golden brand iridescent Pearl paint and dry brush that across the metallics leaving some gaps for some depth and variation and then proceeded to go across the metallic areas with some emerald green from Army painters metallics collection. I then took some heavy metal from the Blanche Master Collection and outline some parts of wear on the armor along with dry brushing it and spots to emulate scuffs.
After that point it took some Grim rust from the Blanche collection and add some rust to some of the bolts and to some of the spikes through the cross and the back and the chains and some other metallic parts to just give a weathered and aged look. I also picked out some accent work with some Emperor's gold to make it visually stand out. Then added some gemstone red to some of the gold accents for just variation and appearance.
I did the face with some opal skin followed by warm skin shade and did the eyes with a mixture of some burst ocher and banshee Brown with a sewing needle because that's what I got. The beard was left with Zenithal before being dry. Brushed a second time with some white and then some holy white speed paint over top of that to add some depth. For the cloak I did the scripture pages with some of that sunburst ocher before going over with a pass of red tone followed by some soft tone for the pages and over top of the red and the chains and other metallic items were done with some Grim dark shadow on top of that.
The leather was done with some hardened leather Speed paint and then finished with some Grim Dark Shadow after the paint had dried. For the Bible. The cover is done in hardened leather and the inside was some ocher paint over the base coat followed by some sepia tone. I utilize the technique with permission from grimdark compendium and took some decals from the satinign Terminator kit and added those to the pages for words and it ended up looking pretty nice. I then of course went over that with some soft tone and aged it with some Grim Dark Shadow. At the end. The remainder of the model was unified washed and Grim Dark Shadow except for the face which I wanted to stand out a bit more.
The base was done with some noble skin over a yellow and brown base coat and then from there I added some Vallejo thick mud effect to the base to the feet and also to the cloak itself to give the appearance of being trudging through the trenches. I wanted to make the weapons. The armor look rusty but cared for almost like a good patina but it still operates. All in all, this took about 4 hours and was a fun build and was an amazing print by a good friend of mine.
